Practising Parisienne with… is a monthly interview series that gives me the excuse to find out more about the wonderful people that I share this beautiful city with. It’s also an extension of my book, Practising Parisienne: Lifestyle Secrets from the City of Lights, which I published in 2021 and a way for it to live on as Paris, and the people and places in it, evolve.
The personalities I’ll be interviewing each month are friends and people who inspire me. I’ll be picking their brains about their most-used skincare items, the items of clothing they believe everyone should have in their wardrobe, discovering their favorite French films and music, who they’d love to have dinner with and revealing their little black book of Parisian addresses. This month, I’m excited to welcome Senior Editor at Vanity Fair, influencer, style maven and friend, Bénédicte Burguet Journé.

Bénédicte is one of the most Parisian of Parisians I know; it’s an attitude and sensibility that she wears easily and that filters through into all areas of her life, from her style and interiors, to her way of living. She represents that sought-after simple French elegance that many try to replicate, but that few achieve. Always effortlessly put together in a uniform of denim, shirts and blazers, with natural beauty and minimal embellishment, it wouldn’t surprise me if she practices Chanel’s famous quote: “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.”
Born in Rome, she grew up in Paris near Parc Monceau in the 8th arrondissement, not far from where she lives today with her husband and daughter, Blanche. I’ve always admired her no-fuss, easy elegance and often discover some important tidbit about skincare or the body - she’s a well of beauty and health knowledge. Je ne connais pas plus parisienne que Bénédicte; sa personnalité, sa sensibilité se révèlent dans toutes les étapes de son quotidien: son style vestimentaire, la déco de son appartement, sa façon de vivre traduisent cette élégance française simple et recherchée que beaucoup essaient de reproduire, mais que peu atteignent Elle porte toujours, des basiques: des jeans, des chemises et des blazers. Elle sait rester simple, naturelle, sans fioriture. Je ne serais pas surprise qu'elle mette en pratique la célèbre citation de Chanel : “Avant de quitter la maison, regardez-vous dans le miroir et enlevez une chose.”
Née à Rome, elle a grandi à Paris près du parc Monceau, dans le 8ème arrondissement, non loin de l'endroit où elle vit aujourd'hui avec son mari et sa fille Blanche. J'ai toujours admiré son élégance sans chichis, sa sobriété et je découvre toujours un petit détail sur les soins qu’elle apporte à la peau de son visage ou de son corps. Why do you think Paris and its way of life are so alluring to foreigners?
Because it is the most beautiful city in the world, our cafés, book shops, architectures, and history are unique!
Pourquoi penses-tu que Paris et son mode de vie séduisent tant les étrangers ?
Parce que c'est la plus belle ville du monde, que nos cafés, nos librairies, notre architecture et notre histoire sont uniques !
What do you love most about living in Paris?
The architecture around me, everything (from the past) is amazingly beautiful.

L'architecture qui m'entoure, tout (le passé historique) est incroyablement beau.
You’ve been a fashion & beauty journalist for over ten years, what has your experience taught you about style & skincare?
Less is more. I used to dress up a lot when I was in my 20s, but now that I am surrounded by clothes for my work, I tend to be much more minimalist in my wardrobe.
Tu étais journaliste de mode, de beauté - santé pendant plus de dix ans. Quelle a été ton expérience en matière de style et de soins de la peau ?
“Le minimum c’est mieux”. Je m'habillais beaucoup lorsque j'avais une vingtaine d'années, mais maintenant mon vestiaire reste simple et pratique, facile à porter pour travailler.
What’s your tip for helping someone find their own style?
To get inspired, you must test and learn.

What are the 3 items that every woman, Parisian or otherwise, should have in their wardrobe, in your opinion?
A beautiful coat, a sharp jacket and a good pair of jeans (may I add a black slip dress too?)

Un beau manteau de bonne facture, bien coupé, une veste élégante et une bonne paire de jeans (puis-je ajouter une robe noire ?).
And in their beauty cabinet?
A good cleanser - I use Caudalie mousse, 111Skin or Tata Harper; moisterizer - The Cream by Augustinus Bader and a signature scent - I wear Cologne Jean Marie Farina by Roger Gallet or Blanche by Byredo. Blanche is my daughter’s name, but the perfume is also the most fresh and crystalline. It’s a clean scent - it’s chic.

Un bon nettoyant visage- j'utilise la mousse Caudalie, 111Skin ou Tata Harper; une crème hydratante - The Cream d'Augustinus Bader et un parfum signature - je porte la Cologne Jean Marie Farina de Roger Gallet ou Blanche de Byredo. Blanche est la prénom de ma fille mais aussi le parfum le plus frais et cristallin que je connaisse. Une odeur de « propre » chicissime.
What’s on your shopping wishlist for summer?
Black sunglasses from Anine Bing or Andy Wolf, black Repetto ballerinas and a dress from Icicle.

Audrey Hepburn, because she is so chic and timeless.

What’s an up and coming (or established) French brand that you’re loving right now? And what item would you buy?
Hermès is definitely my favourite brand. I would go for any of the bags / collection. It’s impossible to chose.

Hermès est sans aucun doute ma marque préférée. J'achèterais n'importe quel sac de n’importe quelle collection. Il est impossible de choisir.

A Valextra big bowling bag and a small chanel pochette.

I know you as someone who believes in trusting the universe and the art of manifestation - what advice would you give to someone trying to find their way in the world?
Meditate, the light comes very often during deep meditation.
Je te connais comme quelqu'un qui croit en l'universalité, en la spiritualité, qui va au bout de ses rêves et de ses désirs. Quels conseils donnerais-tu à quelqu'un qui essaie de trouver sa voie dans le monde ?
Méditez, la lumière vient très souvent pendant la méditation profonde.

Pasta with garlic and parmesan.

The first album of Françoise Hardy, obviously. (She sadly died recently).

Favorite French film?
Beauty and the Beast by Cocteau that my mother introduced me to when I was 6 years old. It was my first experience of aesthetics.

An album that anyone who loves Paris and French culture should have on their playlist?
An album by the astonishing Serge Gainsbourg (1961) with la chanson de Prévert. The most beautiful French song ever sung.

Where are you going (or did you go) for your summer holidays?
A family cruise in Greece, then I’ll be working from home in Provence and finally I’ll be spending 2.5 weeks in Corsica.
