Things to love, read, wear & inspire - September Edit
Things I've been loving lately, including the best trench I've ever owned, the series I'm watching, a versatile clutch and the perfume I'm wearing!
A quick reminder…If you’d like to gain FULL ACCESS to my archive of wardrobe, homeware and travel edits, including my Little Black Book of Paris addresses, a subscription works out at just €5 a month (instead of 6€) if you sign up to the yearly plan (that’s only 1.16€ a week — less than a croissant!)
Just as I was writing this, Victor rang me in a panic to say that Indy had killed a pigeon in the woods and could I come quickly with dog treats to help him catch her. He also asked if I could bring a laptop and phone cable as he was almost out of battery, and worried that he would no longer be able to follow her location on the gps app. Just perfect, I thought. So I immediately stopped what I was doing, shoved my laptop in a bag, found a cable, grabbed the dog biscuits and power-walked the 25 minutes it takes from ours to reach the large, wide open space of bois de vincennes. The only place we let her off the leash so she can run free.
As I was approaching his location (very out of breath), I could make out his silhouette. Off to the left I could hear a dog making a lot of noise, whose bark had a shriek to it. I suspected it to be Indy - when she sees a squirrel or a cat, (unfortunately), she goes nuts and shrieks. My suspicion was confirmed when he started walking towards the direction the noise was coming from. Just as I was getting close, she suddenly emerged from the trees (as if she knew I was near, and had waited for me to walk all that way), and came close enough to Victor so that he could re-attach the leash to her collar. I let out a huge sigh of relief and also felt a little annoyed that I’d walked all that way for nothing. But all's well that ends well! (And at least I got some exercise).
Turns out the pigeon she’d caught wasn’t dead and the moment she’d laid it at Victor’s feet, it revived itself and flew away. Indy then bolted after it into the thick of the woods and out of Victor’s sight. Needless to say we won’t be letting her off her leash for a while. She is a hunting dog by nature and still has a very strong instinct for it. Luckily this is the only incident we’ve had in the months we’ve let her run free. What an adventure for a Friday afternoon!
Things to love, read, watch, wear & inspire:
I’m rarely one to jump on a series bandwagon; I usually like to give something so hyped a bit of breathing space and then decide in my own time whether or not it’s really worth it. But when I saw this was starring Seth Cohen from the OC (aka Adam Brody), along with a few people I follow raving about it on social media, I couldn’t resist. The writing is sharp, witty, funny and emotional - I’ve laughed out loud numerous times and cried. Highly recommend!
There’s a very small window when one can wear a trench in northern europe, but besides this morning’s almost baltic temperature, it looks like I can get a few more weeks wear out of this brilliant style from Arket. I sized up to 36 for extra over-sizedness.Â
Politics on the Edge by Rory StewartÂ
I haven’t had time to read these past few weeks, which is sad - but I’m very much looking forward to picking this book back up when I’m in Lisbon next week with my mum to celebrate her birthday. It’s so well written - Rory manages to make politics sound riveting!
Hermès Barénia Eau de Parfum
A couple of weeks ago I was kindly invited to the launch of the maison’s newest perfume release. We took the train to Lille and onto Villa Cavrois, a beautifully-restored modernist villa built in the 30s to celebrate Barénia’s launch. I’ve worn it every day since.
Mecca Cosmetica SPF50+ Brightening Sun Serum 50ml
I started using this a couple of weeks ago and am really liking it! It’s lightweight, not too greasy and works well under make-up. I’ll be taking it on my trip to Lisbon next week where it will be a little warmer and sunnier.
I love a fancy notepad; somehow it makes list-writing all the more fun. Mont Blanc kindly gifted these black leather, initialled notebooks for the Substack dinner I organised on Saturday, and I can’t wait to use mine. It would also make a great (unisex) gift for those tricky to buy for.
I’ve worn this bag almost every day since it arrived. And what I didn’t realise is that the strap is just the right lenght to also wear as a crossbody, making it the most versatile bag in my wardrobe right now!
Denim jackets have overtaken my oversized black blazer in terms of amount worn! I’ve been sporting an oversized style all summer, but was kindly sent this fitted style and wore it for the first time on Saturday with a white top and black leather skirt and felt really good in it.
Thanks for reading. Much love, Marissa xx
